Polymarket fees explained

The formula, worked examples and rebates

11 min readยทUpdated Sep 27, 2026

Polymarket charges takers a fee and pays makers a rebate. The taker fee is rate x shares x price x (1 - price). On polymarket.com the rate depends on the market's category, from 0 for geopolitics to 0.07 for crypto. On Polymarket US the rate is 0.0695 on every market. Deposits and withdrawals are free on both.

Polymarket runs two separate exchanges with two separate fee schedules. This page covers both, shows the fee at every price, and points out where the costs hide.

The Polymarket fee formula

fee = rate x C x p x (1 - p)

  • C is the number of shares.
  • p is the price in dollars.
  • rate comes from the category on polymarket.com, or 0.0695 on Polymarket US.

The p x (1 - p) term peaks at 50 cents. A coin flip pays the most and a near certainty pays almost nothing. 30 cents and 70 cents pay the same, because 0.30 x 0.70 is the same as 0.70 x 0.30. Kalshi and Gemini use the same shape, so the venues only differ in rate, rounding and rebates.

You only pay when your order takes liquidity: a market order, or a limit order priced through the best offer. A limit order that rests on the book is a maker order, and makers pay nothing on either version.

Since the CLOB V2 upgrade on April 28, 2026, the protocol sets the fee at match time, so your signed order no longer carries a fee rate. Developers can read a market's fee through the client's market info call. See the Polymarket API guide for the V2 changes.

Worked example: 100 shares of a politics market at 50 cents. 0.04 x 100 x 0.50 x 0.50 = $1.00. The same trade in a crypto market: 0.07 x 100 x 0.50 x 0.50 = $1.75. The category alone changes your fee by 75%.

Polymarket US fees at every price

Polymarket US uses one rate, 0.0695, effective 12 AM ET on September 25, 2026. Fees round to the cent with banker's rounding: a half cent rounds to the even cent. Makers receive a rebate at a 0.0125 rate.

PriceCost of 100Taker paysMaker receivesMath for the taker fee
1 cent$1$0.07$0.010.0695 x 100 x 0.01 x 0.99 = 0.0688

99 cents$99$0.07$0.010.0695 x 100 x 0.99 x 0.01 = 0.0688

Polymarket's own example matches: 1,000 contracts at 10 cents cost the taker $6.26 and pay the maker $1.12. The raw taker fee is 6.255, a half cent, and banker's rounding sends 6.255 up to 6.26.

  • Table tennis moves to a 0.10 taker rate at 11:59 PM ET on September 30, 2026. 100 contracts at 50 cents will cost $2.50.
  • Volume rebates pay takers back part of last month's fees, weekly: 10% on $250,000 to $1 million of volume, 25% on $1 million to $10 million, 50% above $10 million.

The longshot tax on Polymarket

Measure the fee against your stake and against your profit, and the picture changes. The table uses the 0.05 sports rate on polymarket.com and the 0.0695 rate on Polymarket US, 100 shares each.

99 cents0.05%4.95%0.07%7.0%
  • Longshots pay the most per dollar staked. On Polymarket US a 5 cent share costs 6.6% of your stake in fees. Most 5 cent shares expire worthless, so you're paying that fee on money you'll lose.
  • Favorites pay the most per dollar won. Buy at 90 cents on Polymarket US and fees take 6.3% of your profit. Heavy favorites usually carry a thin edge, and the fee eats a big slice of it.
  • The share of stake equals the rate times (1 - price). The share of profit equals the rate times the price. Remember those two and you'll never need the table again.

How much edge you need to beat the fee

On Polymarket US, 100 contracts at 50 cents cost $1.74 in fees, about 1.74 cents a contract. You need a true probability of 51.74% to break even. On a polymarket.com politics market the fee is 1 cent a contract, so you need 51%. Pick the venue with the lower rate for thin-edge trades.

A round trip pays two fees

Selling before a market resolves is a second taker trade. Resolution itself is free. Here's the same sports position on both versions, 200 shares bought at 30 cents.

Steppolymarket.com sports (0.05)Polymarket US (0.0695)
Buy 200 at 30 cents$60 cost, $2.10 fee$60 cost, $2.92 fee
Sell 200 at 45 cents$2.475 fee$3.44 fee
Gross profit$30.00$30.00
Total fees$4.575$6.36
Net profit$25.425$23.64
Hold to a win instead: net profit$137.90$137.08

The math on polymarket.com: 0.05 x 200 x 0.30 x 0.70 = 2.10 to enter and 0.05 x 200 x 0.45 x 0.55 = 2.475 to exit. On Polymarket US: 0.0695 x 200 x 0.21 = 2.919, rounded to $2.92, and 0.0695 x 200 x 0.2475 = 3.44. Held to a win, the 200 shares pay $200 on a $60 cost, and the only fee is the entry fee.

  • Fees took 15% of the swing trade's gross profit on polymarket.com and 21% on Polymarket US.
  • Held to a win, fees took 1.5% of profit on polymarket.com and 2.1% on Polymarket US.
  • If you rest your exit as a limit order, the exit fee drops to zero on both versions.

What a month of trading costs

Say you place 40 taker trades a month on Polymarket US, 50 contracts each, at an average price of 40 cents. Each trade pays 0.0695 x 50 x 0.40 x 0.60 = $0.834, rounded to $0.83. Forty trades cost about $33 in fees. The same 40 trades as resting maker orders cost $0 and pay you about $6 in rebates (0.0125 x 50 x 0.24 = $0.15 a fill). The gap between the two habits is roughly $39 a month on $800 of trading.

Maker rebates in detail

Both versions pay makers, just in different ways.

  • polymarket.com pools a share of the taker fees your resting orders collect. Crypto pays 20%. Most other categories pay 25%. Polymarket pays it daily once it reaches $1. For sports, the trading fees help article says 15%, the maker rebates article says 20% and the docs say 25%, so check the maker rebates page before you plan around that number.
  • Polymarket US pays each maker fill directly: 0.0125 x C x p x (1 - p). 100 contracts filled at 50 cents pay you $0.31.

Our take: if you trade Polymarket at all, trade as a maker. You pay nothing, you get paid, and you fill at your price. The cost is time: a resting order waits for a taker and sometimes never fills.

Builder fees on polymarket.com

Apps built on polymarket.com register as builders and attach a builder code to each order. A builder can charge its own fee on top of Polymarket's, capped at 1% of notional (100 basis points) for takers and 0.5% (50 basis points) for makers. A builder can change its rate at most once every 7 days. The fee equals notional x basis points / 10,000.

Example: 100 shares at 50 cents through an app charging the full 1% taker builder fee. Notional is $50. The builder fee is $0.50. Add a $1.25 sports fee and your total cost is $1.75.

Polymarket combo fees

Polymarket US charges combos (parlays) a separate taker fee: C x p x [0.0695 x (1 - p) + 0.04 x (1 - p)^4]. The second term grows as the combo price falls, so long parlays pay a surcharge.

PriceCombo fee on 100Single-market fee on 100Surcharge
50 cents$1.86$1.74+7%
20 cents$1.44$1.11+30%
10 cents$0.89$0.63+41%
5 cents$0.49$0.33+48%

Polymarket's own example: 1,000 combo contracts at 50 cents cost the taker $18.62 and pay the maker $3.12. Our math agrees: 1,000 x 0.50 x (0.0695 x 0.50 + 0.04 x 0.0625) = 18.625, which banker's rounding takes to $18.62. More on combos in Polymarket parlays explained.

Deposit and withdrawal fees

  • polymarket.com: free from Polymarket. Your bridge, chain or exchange may charge its own fee. Polymarket suggests splitting withdrawals over $50,000 to limit slippage when pUSD converts back to other tokens.
  • Polymarket US: free by debit card, ACH and wire. Debit card and ACH take 3 to 4 business days, wire takes 1.

Six ways to pay less on Polymarket

  1. Rest limit orders. Makers pay zero and get paid on both versions.
  2. Know the category. A politics market on polymarket.com charges 43% less than a crypto market at the same price.
  3. Hold winners to settlement. Settlement is free. Selling early pays a second taker fee.
  4. Watch the builder fee. Trading through an app adds up to 1% of notional as a taker.
  5. Keep combos short. The combo surcharge climbs from 7% at 50 cents to 48% at 5 cents.
  6. Go big or rest. Polymarket US volume rebates return up to half of your taker fees above $10 million a month.

Where Rivo fits

Rivo is not an exchange. It's a $15 a month terminal across Polymarket, Polymarket US, Kalshi and Gemini. Your funds stay on the venue, and Rivo shows you the fee before you pay it.

  • One ticket, each venue's own formula. Rivo's order ticket walks the live book level by level and runs the venue's fee rules: the market's own fee rate on polymarket.com, the fee coefficient on Polymarket US, the series multiplier on Kalshi and 0.07 and 0.0175 on Gemini. The ticket shows the average fill, the fee and the total before you click Buy.
  • Honest about our own fee. On polymarket.com, Rivo trades as a registered builder. Its ticket includes Rivo's builder fee on polymarket.com taker orders, set at 1% of the order's cost, and shows you the amount before you confirm. Rivo adds no fee on Polymarket US, Kalshi or Gemini orders.
  • Research first. The Polymarket leaderboard ranks wallets by profit on settled markets, after they paid their fees. The whale tracker shows the large trades as they print.
  • Parlays in one slip. The market explorer's parlay slip builds Polymarket and Polymarket US combos from any search.
