Why is Kalshi restricted in some states?

Kalshi, Polymarket US and Gemini hold federal licenses from the CFTC. Several states say sports contracts are gambling, and gambling belongs to the states. The fight runs through the federal appeals courts, and the courts disagree:

Where a court orders a geofence, Kalshi blocks the named categories for users in the state and leaves the rest open. Economics, weather, financials and crypto markets have stayed open in every state with an order so far. Until the Supreme Court settles the split, expect the map to move every few weeks.

How to confirm your own access

1. Pick your country and state in the checker at the top of this page.
2. Open the venue's app and sign up. Each venue checks identity and residence at signup.
3. Open a market in the category you want. The app shows whether your account trades the market.

Which countries can't use Kalshi?

Kalshi's Member Agreement lists these as restricted jurisdictions for trading event contracts:

Which countries can't use Polymarket?

Blocked entirely: Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, plus the Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine.

Close only, where existing positions can be closed and new ones are rejected: United States, Australia, Belarus, Belgium, Brazil, Burundi, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Iraq, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Myanmar, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States Minor Outlying Islands, Venezuela, Yemen, Zimbabwe, plus the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec.

Close only on the website, with API orders accepted: Ireland, Japan, Malta, Netherlands, South Korea (Malta for sports markets only).

Polymarket's help center lists some of these as fully blocked rather than close only. Either way you cannot open a new position from them, and Polymarket forbids using a VPN to get around the block.
